Lear was born on Altam II, and grew up alongside Tess from a young age. Together they formed a best-friend duo of petty cybercriminals throughout their formative years, which culminated in the catastrophic failure that caused Riven and Tess to fuse. In his rush to help, Lear slowly but surely grew a crippling stimulant addiction which follows him constantly and shaped an inferiority complex stemming from his perception that he's the only one who seems to need help to remain a valued contribution to their growing crew.

He found solace in the company of Sage and Erika, both of whom could relate well to his chronic burnout and substance abuse problems. As his best friend grew more and more out of his reach, he grew more and more withdrawn, eventually culminated in his quietly leaving the group in an ill-conceived attempt to lighten their burden. When his mental burdens rose to their peak just as his drug withdrawals hit, it was only the concerted effort by the rest of his found family that brought him back into the fold and showed him the support he so sorely needed to see.

Lear is a passively neurotic and high-strung individual who relies on a cocktail of drugs to mask his crippling mental illnesses. While his voice is low, slow, and even, he is known to speak blindingly quickly as he dives into work he feels he's good at. He often swings between bursts of extreme energy and stretches of lethargic dissociation as his various medications phase in and out of his system.
